The Book Oeroeg
Every year the campaign ‘The Netherlands Read!’
is held, a reading month that centers around a specific book,
which is distributed for free to the members of all public
libraries. The book is theirs to keep; under one condition:
they should read the book and talk about it with fellow
readers.
This year the selected book is Oeroeg, first published in 1948,
written by Hella S.Haasse, the nestor of Dutch literature.
During the event the Indonesian translation of the book will
be presented. The story of Oeroeg takes place in
and has a universal theme, the friendship between two
persons from two different cultures in a time of political
