The Beauty in Diversed Movements
Dance Photography by FD Sukhmana

The photographic works of FD. Sukhmana, now based in Solo, Central Java, captures the serene beauty of dance. With a focus on heritage objects, he takes photographs of Javanese dance performances as a means of preserving them. He believes that dance is a universal language and that each country, no matter where one comes from, has its own form of unique and enchanting dance culture or what he calls the "local genius". When shooting his subjects, Sukhmana senses the vibrations coming from the dancers' movement and intuitively lets this energise his photography. He also captures on film other forms of Indonesian dance and documents works by other international artists, a passion he has cultivated for the past seven years. In conjunction with da:ns festival and Pesta Raya, this exhibition gives you an insight through the photographer's eyes as he captures the dancers in intimate settings during rehearsals and on stage.
