Photographers Marcela Taboada, from Mexico and Desiree Harahap from Indonesia gather in 'Saling Menatap [Looking at Each Other]' in Jogja Gallery from June 14th to the 27th, 2010.
As part of the International Women's Day commemoration, the Embassy of Mexico and Ministry of Culture and Tourism join their efforts to display a dialogue between women photographers from both countries.
Marcela Taboada, from Mexico received a scholarship from the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and for two months she traveled to Java, Sumatra and Bali, where, as she has said, "began to photograph with her soul", the people, their culture and traditions, their religion, life at home, on the streets, in the towns, and learnt and captured the real beauty of Indonesia and its people.
Desiree Harahap received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of Mexico in 2009. For six months she traveled to several cities in four Mexican states from Mexico City to Oaxaca, Chiapas and Jalisco.
The journey opened her eyes to new perspectives about life, and challenged her curiosity and passion to capture the real essence of such celebrative heritage through her lenses. She was overwhelmed by the fascination of Mexico's cultural dynamics and acute uniqueness in each place she visited and the people she met along the way.
This exhibition has been made possible in Indonesia by the generous support of the Government of Mexico, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and Indonesian companies: Bank Negara Indonesia [BNI], DHL Express, Mandala Air, IMR, PT Pola Cakra Mandiri and Jogja Gallery, Yogyakarta.
