artist's statement   Kota adalah bagian dari integritas sosial, politik, ekonomi dan kebudayaan dengan banyak  persoalan rumit didalamnya. Yogyakarta menjadi pilihan saya sebagai ruang dan interaksi untuk berkarya dengan menggunakan medium fotografi karena saya adalah salah satu dari ratusan seniman yang menggagas visual tentang kota sebagai bagian dari aktivitas berkeseniannya, dengan memilih sudut pandang personal, keseharian dan sering saya lihat tentang kota ini.   Persoalan dalam hal ini menjadi persoalan pribadi sejak saya memutuskan untuk tinggal di kota ini yaitu tentang relasi, aktifitas, mobilitas, ikon, gaya hidup dan tentu saja hal hal yang menarik dalam sudut pandang mata saya, karena proyek proyek seni yang saya kerjakan hampir selalu berhubungan dengan keberadaan dan keterikatan saya terhadap kota ini.    Proyek fotografi ini tidak sepenuhnya menggambarkan perkembangan Yogyakarta secara detail, hanya fragmen fragmen pendek ketika saya melihat ada sesuatu yang memotifasi saya untuk menghentikan sepersekian detik kecepatan gerak, ritme dan rutinitas Yogyakarta sebagai kota yang selalu berkembang dengan medium yang selama ini saya tekuni dan seriusi. (Edwin "Dolly" Roseno Kurniawan)   Frozen City   Ketika kecil kota selalu saya bayangkan bagai gugusan kubus. Satu kubus dan lainnya dihubungkan dengan jembatan layang. Diantara jembatan layang dan kubus-kubus itu ratusan helikopter atau pesawat berbaling-baling hilir mudik. Saya sedang membayangkan kota masa depan tentu saja. Khayalan waktu kecil tiga puluh tahun yang lalu tetap tak terwujud hingga sekarang. Kota bukanlah gugusan kubus, tidak ada jembatan layang yang bersilang sengkarut, tidak ada helikopter menggantikan mobil. Kota Yogyakarta (sebagian) masih seperti 30 tahun yang lalu. Ada perubahan tentu saja. Lebih banyak mobil dan sepeda motor tapi secara fisik tidak jauh berbeda.   Apakah kota ini telah membeku?   Dolly (Edwin Roseno, 29 th) memilih untuk menamai pameran tunggalnya di Kedai Kebun dengan Kota (di)Beku (kan)/Frozen City. Jangan-jangan Dolly mempunyai mimpi yansg sama dengan saya ketika ia kecil. Atau bisa jadi dia menyimpulkan itu semua dari potret-potret yang telah ia buat. Seluruhnya mengambil tempat di Yogyakarta. Sebuah kesimpulan setelah sekian lama berkelana dengan motornya ke bagian-bagian paling rumpil dari kota yang dipanggil oleh Rendra dengan sebutan kasur tua.   Bisa jadi kota ini beku tapi tidak dibekukan. Kota selayaknya organisma selalu bergerak dan berubah. Yang membedakan satu dan lainnya adalah kecepatan perubahan itu sendiri. Yogyakarta di sebagian wilayah lambat berubah tapi diwilayah lain terlalu cepat. Daerah Selokan Mataram adalah sebuah contoh wilayah yang paling berkembang di Yogyakarta. Sewaktu kuliah di akhir delapan puluhan, daerah ini adalah sarang penyamun dan begal-begal durjana. Sekali kita lengah, lewat di daerah ini terlalu malam, bisa jadi kita pulang hanya dengan menggunakan celana dalam. Sebaliknya sekarang jika pulang kemalaman dan lewat daerah ini, bisa jadi anda mati kekenyangan atau mabuk berat karena banyaknya warung dan bar penjualan minuman keras oplosan yang selalu menggoda untuk kita untuk mampir.   Perubahan itu terjadi cepat, mungkin hanya dalam hitungan beberapa tahun. Daerah senyap tiba-tiba jadi riuh rendah. Tapi ada yang ternyata tak berubah. Foto serie Dolly tentang coca cola (Beyond Coca Cola, 2006) menyiratkan itu. Seonggok warung minuman bersoda itu di tengah segala sesuatu yang bergerak; cepat atau lambat. Bayangan orang yang bergerak membuat merek minuman ternama itu terabaikan. Tak diperhatikan. Akan tetapi sebagai sebuah entitas kapitalis dia tetap saja mencuri perhatian. Tanpa kita memperhatikan pun sistem ini (diam-diam) memberangus. Bekerja seperti kanker mengerogoti kita dari jam ke jam, membuat semakin ketagihan atas kenikmatan semunya, seperti LSD. Kapitalisme global bekerja sampai ke titik terjauh dari pusat dimana ia diciptakan. Titik itu bagai selang yang menyedot kemakmuran dari negara-negara paria ke negara kaya, terus menerus, detik ke detik. Kita disedot sambil senyum kesenangan, seperti oral seks: korban yang berbahagia. Foto itu bisa jadi tidak berbicara sejauh itu. Akan tetapi godaan tanda: coca cola, kilatan orang bergerak, dan sepintas rerimbunan daun hijau menggiring saya ke arah itu: batu beton kapitalisme yang keras membatu ketika semua hancur seperti kerikil.   Foto-foto Dolly berbicara tentang kota, dengan semua detil wajahnya. Pagi, siang, malam semuanya terekam. Kota yang dibekukan oleh cahaya yang terekam di kotak hitam berpenjera. Apa lagi yang mau kita cari darinya? artist's statement   City is part of social, politic, economic, and culture integrities with complicated matters in it. Yogyakarta becomes my choice as the interaction space to work with, using the medium of photography. Because I am one of hundreds of artists who brought the idea about the visual of the city as part of its art activities, through the personal point of view of the daily life that I have seen about this city.   The problem becomes my personal matters since I decided to stay in this town. Those are about relation, activities, mobility, icons, life style, and of course, interesting things to me, because the art project that I am working on is always related to my existence and bound to this town.   This photography project entirely describes the growth of Yogyakarta in details. It is about short fragments when I saw something interesting and motivated me to stop for such-a-percent of second of movement, rhythm, and routines speeds of Yogyakarta as developing city using the media that I elaborated seriously. (Edwin "Dolly" Roseno Kurniawan)   Frozen City   When I was little, I imagined city as a cluster of cubes. One cube and the others are connected with flyover. Between the flyover and the cubes, there are hundreds of helicopters or planes come and go. I was imagining the future city for sure, and that childhood imagination 30 years ago still have not occurred until now. City is not a cluster of cubes; there are no flyovers that intercrossing and no helicopters replacing the cars. Yogyakarta (some parts of it) still the same as 30 years ago. Off course, there are some changing, more cars and motorcycles, but physically it is not too different.   Is this city frozen?   Dolly (Edwin Roseno, 29 years old) chose to title his solo exhibition at Kedai Kebun with Frozen City / Kota (di)Beku(kan). Maybe, Dolly has the same dream as mine. Perhaps, he summarizes all of it from the photos he took, which entirely took place in Yogyakarta. A conclusion after all of this time of traveling on his motorcycle to the cloistered parts of the city, which is called kasur tua / old mattress by Rendra (he is one of famous Poets and littérateurs in Indonesia)   It could be that this city is freeze but not being frozen. A city is just like living organism that always move and change. The thing that makes it different is just the speed of the changing itself. At some parts of Yogyakarta, they are slowly changed, but on the other parts, they change rapidly. In the area of Selokan Mataram (drainage system across Yogyakarta) is one of the samples, it is the most rapidly developed area. During my college, at the end of 80s, this area is like robber nest, full with evil hijackers. If we careless when we passing through this area at night, we might back home only with our underwear. In contrary, if we going home late at night passing through this area in these days, we could be dying of overly full or too drunk, because there are a lot of warung (small café with tents) and bars which are offering local mixture liquors and tease us to stop by.   This transformation happened very fast, maybe only in few years. Desolate area turns into crowded area. Otherwise, some parts still the same. Dolly's photo series about coca cola (Beyond Coca Cola, 2006) imply that. A pile of soda beverages placed in the middle of moving objects, fast or slow. The image of moving people made this famous soda beverages brand ignored. But then, as capitalist entity, it still stole the show. Even though we ignored it, this system muzzled (silently). It works as if cancer gnaws us from time to time, makes us addicted to its intangible pleasure, such as LSD (a kind of ecstasy). Global capitalism works until the farthest point from the place where it is made. That point as if a hose that suck the prosperity from the pariah countries to the rich countries, continuously, from time to time; it is sucked while they are smiling in happiness. It is like oral sex, a bliss victim. Those photos probably would not talk that far, but still, the temptation of the sign "coca cola", the flash of moving people, and at first blush of the green leaves, directed me to that point: the petrified concrete-stone capitalism when other system are shattered into gravels.   Dolly's photos talk about city, with all of its face details. In the morning, in the afternoon, and at night, all are recorded. The city is frozen by light and recorded in a black box with aiming point.   Is there anything else that we search from it?   Is this city already tired enough for all of that?    Agung Kurniawan
