MUSIC & ELECTICITY:

STRANGE ATTRACTORS

   INTRODUCTION

CANTUS MUSIC CENTRE  has developed a series of projects concerning soundscapes and electro acoustics.

In 2001 the SOUNDSCAPE JABOTABEK was the result of a cooperation with Goethe Institut – Jakarta, Erasmus Huis – Jakarta, NPS Radio (Dutch Public Radio) and explicitly dedicated to making a composition based on the sound of the environment, by young composers, musicians and even dancers from around Jakarta.

In 2007 the project SOUNDWAVES was established in cooperation with Goethe Institut – Jakarta. SOUNDWAVES was dedicated to electro acoustic music in general. Not only compositions based on sound of the environment, but any sound available, either acoustic or defrived from acoustic sounds. Another angel to this project was the pariticipation of musicians and composers mainly coming from out of Java: two from Padangpanjang, two from Pontianak, two from Sulawesi, two from Ambon (of which one originated from Papua) and only one from Salatiga. This offered also a variety of ethnic backgrounds creating some in depth discussions about the intercultural relations between those cultures (Minang, Dajak, Ambon, Papua and Javanese) and the kind of “Western” set of values in electro acoustic music. In the end this discussion concluded the means of “Western” contemporary music offers new ways of expression but never cats of the values of other cultures as long as mutual respect is essential to the working out in this field.

It seems to be a logical complement to the previous projects to create a project on live electronics, where not only live computer playing is involved, but also the use of a specific electric instrument: the electric guitar.

For that reason Cantus Music Centre is very happy to have found Wiek Hijmans and the POW Ensemble ready to work out the project MUSIC AND ELECTRICITY: STRANGE ATTRACTORS.

There will be workshops, master classes and a project within this project: the rehearsals and performance of ONE, TWO, ONE-TWO-THREE-FOUR by the Dutch composer Gilius van Bergeijk for as much electric guitars as possible! This composition will be performed at the FINAL WORKSHOP CONCERT (June 5. 2009 in Teater Salihara).

Again there will be participation in these workshops and master classes by musicians and composers coming from some regions out of Jakarta (Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Bandung) and even out of Java (Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi).

As for the interdisciplinary angel is concerned: a young female dancer has been invited to work out some of the pieces POW Ensemble is going to play in Teater Salihara (June 7. 2009) in a possible improvising manner.

Thanks to support by several institutions in Indonesia as well as in the Netherlands MUSIC & ELECTRICITY is made possible. Specifically to be mentioned: POW Ensemble which was vital in developing the idea as well as in producing the project, and Teater Salihara which offered us with so much generosity the ‘space’ we needed to hopefully make this project to become a success!
